Youth Safe Haven/Police Ministration Programs
The Eisenhower Foundation has replicated a variety of problem-oriented policing, called community equity policing, which has led to significant reductions in crime in the target communities. The formula for success includes police and community foot patrols, counseling of youth by paid civilians and police, and creation of neighborhood police ministations (modeled after Japanese neighborhood police ministations called Kobans) which integrate with the activities of nonprofit, community-based youth development organizations and their safe havens. In the early 1990’s, the The Eisenhower Foundation has evaluated variations on these themes in San Juan, Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago.
The most recent Youth Safe Haven programs supported by the Foundation are at the following locations:
- Birmingham AL
- Columbia SC
- Dover NH
- Herndon VA
- Irvington NJ
