Washington Irving Middle School
in partnership with
The Alliance for Inclusion and Prevention, Inc.

The full-service community school at Washington Irving builds on a strong partnership between the Alliance for Inclusion and Prevention-the lead agency-- and the school to add value to existing programs and services and to create new ones.

After-school programs. Two hundred and forty students participate in the extended day program, which combines funds from a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant with funds from the Full-Service Community School Initiative.

Summer program. A very successful summer program gave 110 students the opportunity to participate in sports and enrichment activities.

Service learning. The full-service community school is promoting service learning to connect young people to the community and to ground school learning in community experiences. Service learning projects are taking place at a neighborhood elementary school and at a local senior center.

School-day activities: Health and mental health. In collaboration with Arbour Hospital Trauma Center, students in the Multilingual Cluster, many of whom have suffered the trauma of war, will participate in a program that will help them understand their bodies reaction to stress and ways to find comfort and safety when dealing with threats.

Family involvement. Family newsletters are sent to all Irving School students' families. Both English and Spanish versions of the newsletter are sent home. At math breakfasts, held three times this year, families are engaged in hands on math activities to familiarize themselves with the new math curriculum.

Collaborations. The full-service community school at The Irving has strong collaborations with a number of community agencies that help to staff programs at the school or at their own sites: The YMCA, Arbour Hospital, Harvard University, Chandra Center for Space Research at MIT/NASA, Wheelock College, Boston Nature Center, and City Kicks (a soccer program).

The Alliance for Inclusion and Prevention, Inc. is the lead agency collaborating with Washington Irving Middle School in transforming into a full-service community school. This full-service school offers a wide range of services during school hours, after school, and during the summer months. Currently, the partnership is strengthening its family and community involvement components.

The Milton S. Eisenhower Foundation provides funding, technical assistance and process and outcome evaluations of the full-service school program.

Washington Irving Middle School has seen initial improvement as a result of the full-service community school initiative: increased homework completion, better attendance, and improved behavior and academic performance.
