Showalter Middle School
in partnership with the
Tukwila Community School Collaborative

The full-service community school initiative at Showalter Middle School builds on this site's implementation of the Accelerated School Model. This model, developed by Henry Levin in an effort to improve the learning of at-risk students, involves extensive training in inquiry, planning, teamwork, and working with parents. The full-service community school model surrounds this strong core of academic instruction with enrichment activities and health and mental health services.

After-school programs. The full-service community school at Showalter has been offering literacy, mathematics, science, technology, health and nutrition, and peer mediation four days a week to 55 students. The school also offers homework help on those same afternoons. Through collaboration with ArtsCorps Showalter students showcased a video they had created at the Seattle Art Museum. The goal of this program is to improve academic performance by infusing arts into students' learning activities.

Summer and Winter Break Programs. Students participate in summer enrichment and recreational activities in a safe environment while parents are at work.

School day activities. School counselors and teachers are collaborating with the peer mediation coordinator on issues of school safety.

Family and Community Involvement. Showalter has hosted Adefua, an African drum and dance company, that offered an interactive cultural education workshop to students, their parents and the community; thirty five community members attended. The school hosted the Undoing Institutional Racism Workshop. Seventeen community members attended the first session of this ongoing workshop.

Health. Over 200 students were served during the summer health clinics and sixty students received dental services from the Smile Mobile dental clinic.

Showalter Middle School is part of a districtwide collaborative aimed at enhancing "the living, working and learning of children and families by building sustainable coordinated services with community, school, government, foundation and private resources."

Students who need assistance with their schoolwork can join the extended day program and those experiencing behavior receive counseling. Parental educational classes prepare parents to better assist their children. A family resource room provides parents a place to meet with other parents and obtain referrals and useful information on resources. Many family and community involvement initiatives, essential in making such a program successful, are being implemented.

The Milton S. Eisenhower Foundation provides funding, technical assistance and process and outcome evaluations of the full-service school program.

Showlater Middle School has seen initial improvement as a result of the full-service community school intiative: increased homework completion, improved attendance, and improved behavior and academic performance.
