Showalter Middle School -
A Community School for Champions!

The full-service community school at Showalter builds on a professional learning community with a focus on authentic student work as a means to improve instruction and thus the learning of all students. The values of the (Collaborative Analysis of Student Learning or CASL) model are well matched to the principles of full-service community schools. Extensive training in inquiry, planning, teamwork and working with parents are central to the success of CASL and of full-service community schools.

The Tukwila Community School Collaborative (TCSC). This district-wide collaborative is the lead agency partnering with Showalter to develop a full-service community school.  TCSC’s goal is to enhance “the living, working and learning of children and families by building sustainable coordinated services with community, school, government, foundation, and private resources.”

Collaborations. The full-service community school at Showalter is a community effort. A number of local organizations provide programs and services, among them Arts Corps, Seattle SeaHawks, Bellevue Art Museum, City of Tukwila City Council and Parks and Recreation Department, Southwest Youth and Family Center, Highline Community College, University of Washington School of Social Work and the Museum of Flight.

Extended day learning programs. Activities offered four days a week include academic support, literacy, mathematics through games, life skills, dance, peer mediation, soccer, health and nutrition. Through a collaboration with Arts Corps students have had opportunities to showcase their dance and acting skills at the end of the year at the Seattle Performance Arts Theater.

Summer programs. Students and the community have full access to the school during summer months, when a modified version of the school-year program is offered. Students participate in summer enrichment and recreational activities in a safe environment while their parents are at work. Through a productive collaboration with the City of Seattle Summer Food Program, students under 18 years old are provided healthy snacks and lunch.

School safety. School counselors and teachers collaborate with a peer mediation coordinator to address issues of school safety.

Family and community involvement. The Family Literacy Center provides parental educational classes and prepares parents to find employment. Showalter is a resource for parents and a place to meet with other parents and to obtain referrals and useful information on resources. The school offers cultural activities. An African drum and dance company has presented interactive cultural education workshops to students, their parents and the community and an ongoing workshop to combat racism, which is open to the community.

Health. Students have access to summer health clinics and receive free physical exams. An immunization clinic serves students who need shots. A Smile Mobile provides dental services. Showalter in collaboration with the other Tukwila schools hosts a community health day every spring.

The role of Eisenhower Foundation. The Milton S. Eisenhower Foundation provides funding, technical assistance and process and outcomes evaluations of the full-service school to the Showalter partnership.

Positive outcomes at Showalter Middle School. Evaluation findings show that the full-service community school at Showalter had a positive impact on homework completion, attendance and behavior and academic performance.
